Area Search

CBSD Air Scent or Area Search dogs search for human odor in an area using primarily air scent. CBSD has dogs trained as generalists to find any human in an area, whether living or deceased., as well as dogs trained in scent specific air scent.  Area Search dogs are best deployed as a hasty search to rule out areas, or in high probability areas where other searchers are not present in the field.

Area Search dogs may work a "hasty trail" which is usually worked from a well traveled road or pathway, in hopes the dog will detect odor within range from these high probability travel routes. They may also work large areas in a grid pattern of coverage, combined with strategic deviations to best meet terrain and environmental conditions. The goal of an area search is to put the dog in the best locations for detection of a lost person within the area.
